During their study of literacy for personal use, students will read texts that serve a variety of purposes, from everyday content written to convey information, to texts written for specific workplaces or educational settings. Students will employ a variety of strategies to develop their understanding of the purpose and key ideas within the written and spoken language. They will extend their knowledge of the layout and format of a range of text types and use indexes, headings, subheadings, chapter titles and blurbs to locate and extract information. In their study of visual and film texts - The Fly among others - students will examine how purpose, language and structure influence the audience of a text.
In understanding and creating digital texts, students will read, view and interact with different digital texts and participate in learning activities to develop their capacity to explore and discuss their impact. They will identify the ways a visitor encounters and experiences digital texts, considering their purpose and the social, cultural, vocational and workplace values associated with it. They will explore text through the prism of their own experience, knowledge, values and interests, and also those of others. As a part of this exploration of the digital world, students participate and engage in learning practices that will equip them to deal safely and respectfully with others in the digital and virtual world.

Literacy Unit 3
This unit is about building students’ skills and knowledge in accessing and understanding texts they will encounter in their pathways and lives beyond school. It is about helping students learn where different texts can be found and how to extract the information they need from them. It is encouraging students to look beyond the internet to find and access information, and to think about why the texts has been created and for who. It is about building student confidence and awareness of the paths ahead of them to be informed and capable citizens.
Through conducting real life tasks such as doing the research to buy their first car and initiating the process of getting their own life documents like ABNs, car insurance, Medicare, students will engage with the texts they actually need understand in their wider lives. To understand texts for work, students will plan a festival in their interest area such as a version of the Denny Ute Muster or the Blacksmithing Festival or Riverboats.
This unit is also about creating and responding to the texts they will encounter; not being passive about the information but being proactive in sharing and reflecting on what has been learnt. It is looking at the different ways we respond to texts and how we can do this effectively. For instance, we can respond in oral and written forms. Students also learn how to create informational, organisational and procedural texts. This is done by applying the writing process and improving their literacy skills.
