Contemporary Photo Practice (CPP) centers around the development of skills and knowledge related to current photo imaging practice and visual trends in fine art, fashion, advertising and commercial photography.

Throughout the year students will research and apply a range of traditional and contemporary photographic imaging technologies in the production of photographic works. Students will progressively trial, test and evaluate attributes of digital, analogue and hybrid photo imaging technologies to determine their suitability to their own photographic practice and area of industry.

Throughout each semester, students will create a body of work using photo imaging technologies to suit a theme of their choice. In the development of a resolved body of work, students will analyse connections between photo imaging technology and visual representation.

In the study of visual communication, students will research and apply a range of art and design theories that impact on the use of the photographic image. In a study of semiotics, student will investigate the development of visual culture from the 1960s until today, with a focus on the post-modern strategy of appropriation (1960s Pop Art), the role of photography in Conceptual Art (1960s and 70s), selected artists of The Pictures Generation (1970s-90s) as well as selected art theorists and commentators such as Douglas Crimp. Students will evaluate the effectiveness of visual communication in the production of photo images to engage a specific audience relevant to their area of focus (e.g. Fashion, commercial, advertising or fine art photography.)

This subject is run over two semester blocks.

In Semester 1 students will undertake the unit CUAPHI534 Employ specialised imaging technologies and in Semester 2, CUAPRI511 Refine printmaking techniques. CUAPHI531 - Apply visual communication theory to photo imaging practice  is run across both semesters.

Scheduled class time is on Wednesdays over two sessions; 11:05am - 12:45pm and 1:35 - 3:15pm Students are also able to use the facilities (and trainer assistance) during Folio Focus sessions. Students are also expected to undertake coursework during their own time.
