
CUARES403 Research history and theory to inform own arts practice
Semester One Overview:
Throughout Semester One, you will acquire knowledge of the evolution of photography as an art form through classroom lectures, class discussion, exhibition visits, independent research (online or printed matter) and practical applications. There is a strong emphasis on learning through making, whereby you will develop a deeper understanding of photographic art through the creation of a portfolio of artworks exploring a variety of photographic processes & techniques and subject matter. You will generate concepts & solutions in response to work briefs. Exploratory trials and resolved artworks will be created in response to various historical and contemporary artists, artworks and movements/genres of photographic art.

CUARES502 Critique cultural works
For the successful completion of this unit, students must complete the following assessment tasks;

- Then & Now Practical Portfolio

THEN & NOW encourages students to link research to their photo imaging practice. Throughout Semester One, students will acquire knowledge of the evolution of photographic image making through classroom lectures, class discussion, exhibition visits, independent research (online or printed matter) and practical application. There is a strong emphasis on learning through making, whereby students develop understanding through the creation of a portfolio of artworks exploring a variety of photographic processes & techniques and subject matter. Students generate concepts & solutions in response to work briefs; Exploratory trials and resolved artworks are created in response to various historical and contemporary artists, artworks and movements/genres of photographic art. Supporting material (such as articles, reproductions from online and printed media, screen shots, Instagram or blog posts, notes, sketches, inspirational imagery, test strips, photographic prints and technical notes) are collated in a combination of digital and hard copy formats, such as a visual journal, notepad, folder, and/or well organised digital files. This will show evidence of the student's design process by defining, researching, evaluating, refining and reflecting on their work. Students will upload relevant material to Moodle for assessment.
Students are also encouraged to engage in critical thinking and analysis on the traditional and contemporary art traditions and current trends in photographic art practice.
